Microfiche and microfilm destruction services

Microfiche Destruction NJ

Certified & HIPAA Compliant | Serving All of New Jersey

Microfiche and microfilm were once the gold standard for long-term document storage, used by libraries, government agencies, hospitals, banks, and corporations to archive millions of records in compact form. While digital storage has largely replaced these formats, countless organizations across New Jersey still have cabinets and drawers full of microfiche containing sensitive, confidential, and regulated information. New Jersey Shredding provides certified microfiche destruction in NJ, using industrial shredding equipment to render your microfiche and microfilm completely unreadable. Our NAID AAA Certified process ensures HIPAA, FACTA, and regulatory compliance with full documentation.

🔍

All Microform Formats

We destroy microfiche sheets, microfilm rolls (16mm, 35mm, 105mm), aperture cards, jackets, and all other microform media types.

🔒

Secure Shredding

Industrial shredders reduce microfiche to tiny particles, destroying all readable content including text, images, and any silver halide emulsion layers.

Silver Recovery Available

Silver-based microfiche and microfilm contain recoverable silver halide. We offer silver recovery credits that can offset your destruction costs.

Why Microfiche Destruction Is Important

A single microfiche sheet can contain up to 98 miniaturized document pages, and a roll of microfilm can hold thousands of images. These compact formats were specifically designed for high-density, long-term archival storage — meaning the information they contain is still fully readable today, even if the microfiche is decades old. For organizations holding microfiche containing financial records, medical files, personnel data, legal documents, or government records, this represents a significant data security and compliance liability.

When microfiche reaches the end of its retention period or is no longer needed for business purposes, it must be destroyed securely and in compliance with applicable regulations. HIPAA requires healthcare organizations to render patient information unreadable before disposal. FACTA mandates secure destruction of consumer financial data. New Jersey’s Identity Theft Prevention Act imposes additional obligations for the disposal of personal information. Simply discarding microfiche in the trash is a violation of these regulations.

Professional microfiche destruction through New Jersey Shredding ensures your legacy microform records are destroyed thoroughly and documented properly, eliminating compliance risk and freeing up valuable storage space in your facility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of microfiche and microfilm do you accept?

We accept all microform formats including microfiche sheets (COM and source document), 16mm and 35mm microfilm rolls, 105mm microfiche, aperture cards, microfilm jackets, and ultrafiche. Regardless of the format or age, we can destroy it securely.

Does microfiche contain recoverable silver?

Many older microfiche and microfilm types use silver halide emulsions, which contain recoverable silver. Diazo and vesicular microfiche do not contain silver. We can assess your collection during the consultation to determine if silver recovery applies to your specific media.

Should we digitize our microfiche before destroying it?

That depends on your records retention requirements and business needs. If you need to retain the information but no longer want the physical media, digitization before destruction is a good option. We can coordinate timing with your digitization project. Call (201) 371-5900 to discuss your situation.
