Personal and Home Hard Drive Destruction NJ
Old family computers, laptops and external drives hold years of tax returns, bank statements, medical portals, photos and saved passwords. Recycling them without destroying the drive puts all of that at risk. NJ Shredding offers home hard drive destruction for New Jersey residents, physically shredding personal drives so the data can’t be recovered, with a Certificate of Destruction for your records.

Home Hard Drive Destruction in New Jersey: Why It Matters
Deleting files or “resetting” a computer doesn’t remove the data from the drive. Free recovery tools can often bring it back. Identity thieves know that used computers sold online or dropped at recycling events can be a source of personal information. Physically destroying the drive is the simplest way to be certain.
Home destruction is especially useful when you are clearing out a parent’s house, closing a home business, settling an estate or replacing a computer that has stopped working and can’t be wiped.
Residential Drive Destruction: Preparation and Minimums
Before you hand over any drive, make sure you have everything you want to keep. Copy photos, documents and tax records to a new computer, a cloud account or a new external drive, and check that the copy opens. Once a drive is shredded, nothing can be recovered.
Small residential jobs may have a minimum charge, and options depend on your location. Many homeowners combine old drives with boxes of paper records into a single visit. Call us and we’ll explain what makes sense for the amount you have.
Which Devices Have Drives? A Quick Home Checklist
Storage hides in more places than you might expect. Before scheduling, look for:
- Desktop towers and all-in-one computers (internal HDD or SSD)
- Laptops, including older models in closets (many now use soldered SSDs)
- External USB drives, backup drives and old network storage boxes
- USB flash drives and memory cards from cameras
- Home security DVRs and older game consoles
Removing Drives Safely and DIY Limits
If you’re comfortable with a screwdriver, desktop drives are easy to remove. Laptops vary, and many newer models have storage soldered to the motherboard. If so, the whole laptop or board needs to be destroyed. If you’re not sure, bring or hand over the whole device and we’ll handle it.
Hammers and drills are popular DIY methods, but they are risky (flying glass and metal from platters) and often leave large pieces of platter or flash chips intact. Professional shredding reduces the drive to small fragments. For physical destruction we follow the “Destroy” category of NIST SP 800-88, which means the media is physically shredded so it cannot be read or reassembled. You may also see DoD 5220.22-M on policies; that is an overwrite (wiping) method for working drives, not a physical destruction standard.

Pickup, Counting and Optional Serial Numbers
Each drive is counted when we receive it. If you’d like specific serial numbers listed on your certificate, for example for a home business or an estate attorney, ask in advance:
| Item | Serial number | Media type | Custody event | Method | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old family desktop | Recorded from label | HDD 3.5″ | Received at visit | Shredded | Destroyed |
| Laptop drive | Recorded from label | SSD 2.5″ | Received at visit | Shredded | Destroyed |
| USB backup drive | Not visible (enclosure) | External HDD | Received at visit | Shredded | Destroyed, serial exception noted |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prepare my home computer for hard drive destruction?
Back up the files you want to keep and confirm the backup works. Remove the drive if you can, or let us handle the whole device.
Is deleting files or a factory reset enough?
Not reliably. Deleted data can often be recovered. Physical destruction makes the data unrecoverable.
Do you destroy laptop SSDs and NVMe drives?
Yes. If the storage is soldered to the laptop’s board, the board needs to be destroyed instead.
What does the Certificate of Destruction contain?
The date, number of drives, media type and method, plus serial numbers if you asked for them.
What happens to my drives afterward?
The shredded fragments are sent for metal recycling.
Is there a minimum for residential service?
Small jobs may have a minimum charge depending on your location. Call (201) 371-5900 and we’ll explain the options for the number of drives you have.
