Why Server Recycling Requires Special Handling

Enterprise servers typically contain multiple hard drives or SSDs configured in RAID arrays, each holding fragments of sensitive business data, customer records, financial information, or protected health information. A single rack-mount server may contain anywhere from 2 to 24 drives, and a full rack can hold hundreds of data-bearing devices. Improperly disposing of even one server can expose your organization to a significant data breach.

Beyond data security, servers contain materials that require responsible disposal. Circuit boards contain trace amounts of gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. Batteries may contain lithium or lead. Power supplies contain capacitors with hazardous materials. New Jersey’s Electronic Waste Management Act and federal EPA guidelines require proper handling of these materials to prevent environmental contamination.

New Jersey Shredding addresses both concerns with a comprehensive server recycling process that prioritizes data destruction first, then channels all remaining materials through certified recycling processes. We understand enterprise server hardware and can handle all form factors including 1U/2U rack servers, blade servers, tower servers, and specialized storage appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle both rack-mount and blade servers?

Yes. We recycle all server form factors including 1U and 2U rack-mount servers, blade servers and blade chassis, tower servers, and specialized storage appliances. Our team is experienced with hardware from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Cisco, Supermicro, and other enterprise manufacturers.

Can you remove servers from our racks?

Yes. Our team can handle the physical decommissioning of servers from your racks, including disconnecting cables, removing rail kits, and palletizing equipment for transport. We coordinate with your IT team to ensure a smooth process.

What if our servers contain SSDs instead of hard drives?

We destroy SSDs using the same physical shredding process as HDDs. SSDs require physical destruction because data may persist in over-provisioned cells and wear-leveled areas that cannot be reliably accessed by software wiping tools. All SSD serial numbers are documented on your certificate of destruction.
